Pine & Comb — A Playful Dialogue of Forms

In traditional Japanese crests, there are designs where the pine tree is stylized to resemble a comb—or vice versa.

The pine, often seen on Noh and Kabuki stages, has long symbolized longevity and resilience in Japanese culture.

Interestingly, when abstracted, the shape of a pine tree starts to resemble the elegant curve of a traditional Japanese comb.

These motifs likely emerged from a sense of visual playfulness—something this artwork draws upon with a modern, colorful twist.
