A playful boxed pine tree

One of the pine tree crests is a design depicting three pine needles in a diamond-shaped box. 

One of the interesting things about Japanese family crests is that there are many designs that show a playful spirit like this.

I think this design was created because arranging the open pine needles in a box created a sense of depth and added interest. 

Pine trees are plants that symbolize longevity, and in Japan, they are also said to be trees where ancestral spirits dwell.
